Whiplash - Neck Break - Best Los Angeles Chiropractor

What is Whiplash?

Whiplash occurs when the head is violently snapped back and forth. Since your neck is the most flexible part of the spine, it is more vulnerable to injury.

Four Major Types of Whiplash Injury

  • Muscle Injury

During an accident, muscles in the neck and shoulders are often stretched or strained beyond their normal range. This causes painful swelling, tenderness, and muscle spasms that can persist long after the initial impact.

  • Nerve Injury

As muscles are stretched, so are the nerves running through them. Nerves can be overstretched or pinched — particularly if your head was turned at the moment of impact or your headrest was not properly positioned. Nerve injuries can cause radiating pain, numbness, and tingling down the arms and hands.

  • Joint Injury

The joints in each cervical vertebra allow the bones of your neck to move smoothly. A whiplash injury can damage these joints, causing localized neck pain as well as referred pain into the arms, shoulders, and upper back — often mistaken for unrelated conditions.

  • Disc Injury

Spinal discs act as shock absorbers and spacers between the vertebrae, creating space for nerves to exit the spinal cord. A whiplash injury can cause discs to bulge, herniate, or rupture — leading to painful nerve irritation, sciatica, and in some cases, the need for spinal decompression therapy.

How Can Chiropractic Care Help?

Proper treatment of any condition involves addressing the cause — not just the symptoms. As a chiropractor, Dr. Karr is specially trained to pinpoint the root cause of your pain. Your symptoms may stem from a new injury or one sustained years ago. Dr. Karr will review your complete health history and perform a thorough physical examination to identify any underlying structural problems before recommending a care plan.

How Chiropractic Care Helps Auto Injury Patients:

  • Chiropractic care is a safe, effective, and non-surgical treatment for whiplash and soft tissue injuries
  • Restoring proper spinal alignment increases mobility and flexibility — allowing your body to heal faster and more completely
  • Chiropractic adjustments can help restore the normal forward curve of the neck without drugs or surgery
  • Targeted care provides relief from sciatica, pinched nerves, radiating leg pain, and nerve inflammation caused by accident-related disc injuries
  • Non-surgical spinal decompression on the FDA-cleared DRX9000 is one of the most effective treatments available for disc-related sciatica and herniated discs resulting from auto accidents

Whiplash Facts

  • Most rear-impact car accidents occur at speeds between 2.5 and 8 mph — low enough that there may be little visible damage to your vehicle, yet enough force to cause serious soft tissue injury.

    • An impact as low as 5 mph can cause soft tissue damage to the neck and spine
    • In a rear-impact collision, your head can accelerate up to 2.5 times faster than your vehicle — creating a whipping force that strains muscles, ligaments, and discs
    • A significant percentage of whiplash patients develop chronic symptoms if left untreated — and up to 10% experience long-term disability

Early evaluation and treatment are critical. Symptoms from whiplash injuries often appear hours or days after an accident — not immediately. Delaying care can make recovery significantly longer and more difficult.
